2008 Dodgeball Rulebook

NOTE - There are new rules for the 2007 season, read all carefully.

Face off

  1. During the opening face off each player must have at least one foot against the wall.
  2. When grabbing a ball on the face off it must be brought behind the neutral line which will be clearly outlined on the court before it becomes a live ball. Any player hit with a ball prior to it being cleared of the neutral line will not be eliminated.
  3. No sliding is allowed during face offs.  If a player slides during a face off, that player is eliminated. An exception to this rule is if a player is dodging a thrown ball.

Elimination

  1. A ball cannot eliminate more then one player at a time. The first player hit is eliminated, unless a teammate saves him.
  2. You can perform a save by catching a ball that cleanly bounces off of your teammate as long as it does not touch the wall, or floor.
  3. In the event of a caught ball the thrower is out, and the first person eliminated on the catching team returns to the game.
  4. Once the ball hits the wall, floor, or a player that has already been eliminated, it becomes a dead ball. You cannot catch the ball to save a teammate or yourself, and you cannot be eliminated or eliminate an opponent after the ball has touched any of those dead ball objects being the wall or floor.
  5. You may use a ball to block an oncoming ball:  Three important notes to this rule are as follows:

1.Your hand is considered part of the ball, and you will not be out on a ball that hits your hand.

2. If the ball you are holding is knocked out of your hand by a ball you attempt to deflect, you will be called out.

3. If a ball deflects off the ball your are holding and hits you or one of your teammates. The person that gets hit WILL BE CALLED OUT.

f. If two players on opposing teams release a ball at the same time and both are hit, they are both eliminated. In the case of it being the final two players on the court, the person hit first is out.

 g. If a player jumps out of bounds to avoid being hit by a ball, they are called out. However: a player can go out of bounds to catch a ball, or retrieve a ball

Other Rules

  1. You cannot pass a ball to a teammate unless you are holding more then one ball. If you pass a ball, you will be out.
  2. You can only throw the ball at an opposing player, no kicking or anything of that sort.
  3. There is a center line clearly marked, if you step on it or cross it after the release of the ball it is live, and you are still a target. If you cross that line prior to releasing the ball, it becomes a dead ball. You CANNOT reach over the line to grab a ball rolling towards you or away from you at any point. You CANNOT go over the middle line to catch a ball that hits you. Two feet on or over the center line will result in elimination by the player who committed the foul.
  4. If it is point match, the losing team automatically starts with an extra ball which is live right away, until that team either loses or ties it up at point, in which both teams start with a ball.
  5. Substitutes may only enter the match after a game. At no time can any player other than a starter enter the game while it is in progress.
  6. If a 1 v 1 situation occurs during a game one ball will be taken out of play. The side that had the extra ball taken away will have an advantage. That advantage being the other player will have to throw first. In the case that one side has three balls, one ball will be taken out and one player will have two balls to throw. The player that throws first must throw at the player.
  7. Excessive squeezing of the ball can result in that player’s elimination from the game.
  8. All players and fans not playing in the game must be standing behind the sideline. You can not touch the court to retrieve a ball for your team.
  9. There is a referee fee of two dollars a player which must be paid to the referees prior to the start of the first match. (If a team has 7 players $14 dollars must be paid)
  10. Two players must be outside of the train at all times. (the maximum amount of people in a train can be 4) In the event that a player is illegally inside the train, the last player will be eliminated, but a ball must be thrown. Remember there can be no train when there are three players left on the court.
  11. The team with two balls has 5 seconds to throw one of their balls. If the time expires the other team gets the ball.
